from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo Albert Katus (born November 30, 1951 in Steinfeld ) is a German cardiologist and university professor . He is largely responsible for the development of the troponin test and its translation into clinical routine. Hugo Katus is currently the medical director of the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology at the Heidelberg University Hospital . From 2016 to 2019 he was President of the German Society for Cardiology .

Career

Hugo A. Katus was born in Steinfeld (Rhineland-Palatinate) and attended elementary school there until 1962 , in 1970 he graduated from the Lender home school in Sasbach . Katus then studied human medicine at the University of Heidelberg and graduated in 1976. In the same year he received his doctorate on Myocardial anaphylaxis - changes in contraction and membrane properties for Dr. med. He then began his clinical work as an assistant doctor in Internal Medicine III (cardiology) at the Heidelberg University Hospital under the direction of Wolfgang Kübler . As a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Katus spent a research stay at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston from 1978 to 1980 , where he first worked on new enzyme markers for heart attack diagnostics in Edgar Haber's laboratory. After his return, he continued his research and clinical training at Heidelberg University Hospital, where he completed his habilitation in 1987. In 1996 he was offered a C4 professorship for internal medicine at the University Hospital in Lübeck, combined with the medical management of the Medical Clinic II (cardiology, angiology, pulmonology, hemostaseology, psychosomatics). Since 2002, Katus has been medical director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine III (cardiology, angiology, pulmonology) and center spokesman for the medical clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital. In addition, from 2016 to 2019 he was President of the German Society for Cardiology - Heart and Circulatory Research e. V. (DGK) . Hugo Katus is married and has two grown children. Outside the clinic, he is involved in the Rotary Club Heidelberg-Neckar.

Academic work and merit

Katus identified the cardiac troponin T and, together with the Boehringer Mannheim company (now Roche Diagnostics ), developed a measurement method for quantitative determination in the form of an immunoassay. Due to its improved accuracy and sensitivity, the troponin test has been declared the gold standard of infarct diagnostics by the cardiological societies in Europe and the USA and enabled the definition of the so-called non-ST elevation myocardial infarction ( NSTEMI ).

Heidelberg School of Anthropological Medicine

At the ceremonial handover of Ludolf von Krehl's bronze portrait to the clinic in 2017, Hugo Katus explained that despite the enormous medical progress and methodological high-tech, Krehl's concern to see the sick person and not just the disease is still practiced in the clinic be.
