Hugo Johann Asbach (* 1. May 1868 in Cologne , † 24. July 1935 in Rudesheim ) was a German brandy - producer . He invented the brandy chocolates ( brandy bean , Cognac bean , Asbach-praline ). Its best-known product is the Asbach Uralt brandy .

Life

After completing his school education, Hugo Asbach received a commercial training and experience as a distiller at the Cologne-based “Export Company for German Cognac, formerly J. Krayn & Co.” . Then he moved to France to perfect his knowledge with local wine distillers. At the age of 24 Asbach came back to Germany and started his own company.

The Asbach Uralt developed by Hugo Asbach

On May 11, 1892, Asbach went into business for himself together with his brother-in-law Franz Boltendahl, founded the company "Asbach & Co." in Rüdesheim and took over the business of the local company of the "Export Compagnie".

The responsible Reichstag committee selected Hugo Asbach as an expert in 1917 when the "Law on the Spirits Monopoly " was drafted. With his knowledge he had a significant influence on the relevant legislation up into the 1920s. As a wine expert, Asbach took part in negotiations in Paris about a trade agreement between the German Empire and France.

In Article 275 of the Versailles Treaty, at the request of the French, the Allies obliged the Germans to legally prohibit misleading designations of origin. A cognac that did not contain any prescribed ingredients from the Charente growing area was therefore no longer allowed to bear this name. In 1923 the word creation “German brandy”, which goes back to Hugo Asbach, was used in the wine law instead.

The Association of Producers was also forced to change its name. While Hugo Asbach was among the founders of the "Association of German Cognac Distilleries" in 1896, it became the "Association of German Wine Distilleries" in 1920. Asbach was the chairman of the association from 1917 until his death. From 1925 to 1933 he was also president of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Commerce .

family

Asbach was married twice. The marriage with Anna Boltendahl, who died in 1901, had five children, and the marriage with Margarethe Strobel had three children. His daughter Gretel married the manufacturer Everhard Bungartz .
