Hugo Döbler

Hugo Döbler (born March 18,  1923 , † September 29, 1996 ) was a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Döbler was one of the first students at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK), established in Leipzig in 1950, and obtained his diploma in 1952. He wrote his doctoral thesis with Kurt Meinel on the subject of "Combined motor skills in sports games". The work was accepted in 1956. In 1956 he took over the management of the Institute for Movement Studies at the DHfK, in 1957 he became head of the Institute for Sports Games and headed the Sports Games Science Department and the Sports Games research group. In 1961 Döbler was appointed university lecturer and from 1969 was professor for theory and methodology of sports games. In part, he also worked as dean of the faculty for sports methodology and as prorector for scientific development.

Both in theory and in practice, Döbler was a specialist in sports games, he was the coach of the national ice hockey team of the German Democratic Republic and head coach of the German Football Association (DFV). In 1963 his books “Small Games: A Handbook for School and Sports Community” and “Games and Playground Construction in Popular Sports: Games, Exercise Facilities and Equipment” came out, in 1969 he published the book “Abriß einer theory der Sportspiele”. Döbler dealt with soccer training in terms of sports science, analyzed the top-level areas in soccer and ice hockey on the basis of world championships and the Olympic Games. His research work in 1977 also included the discussion of "training over several years in the various types of sport", the historical view of football as well as the analysis of the term ability to play and the systematization of training methods specific to sports games. The book “Sportspiele.” Published in 1988 with Günther Stiehler and Irmgard Konzag . Theory and methodology of sports games ”has been classified as“ a fundamental work for the training of sports teachers and coaches ”. In 1989, in collaboration with Günter Schnabel and Günter Thieß , Döbler brought out the book “Basic Concepts of Sports Games”.
