Günther Stiehler

Günther Stiehler (* July 22, 1925 ; † June 10, 2000 ) was a German sports educator and university professor .

Life

Stiehler played handball for the SG Eutritzsch Leipzig, worked as a new teacher and in the German sports committee .

He became a lecturer at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig, which was founded in 1950, and took over the post of rector in 1952, which he held until 1955. In 1959 he completed his doctoral thesis at the DHfK (title: On tactics in sports games: a description of the nature of sports tactics and a description of the observation methods for tactical actions in sports games as a contribution to improving tactical training ). Stiehler then went to the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , but returned to the DHfK in 1962, where he was employed as a professor, in particular as head of the Institute for Theory and Methodology of School Sports, established in 1963, and as head of the sports games science department. In 1963 he brought out the book Theory of Physical Education . In December 1964 he initiated the "Working Group of the innovators of school sports". The book Methodik des Sportunterrichts , first published in 1966 by a collective of authors under Stiehler's direction, became a standard work which was published in several editions.

From 1972 to 1978 Stiehler was again rector of the DHfK. In 1979 he received the award " Honored University Teacher of the GDR ". In addition to his work in the field of school sports and teacher training, as head of the sports games science department, he dealt in publications with, among other things, the technical and tactical training of sports players, the development of game performance in connection with the training load and the theory and methodology of sports games , according to the title a book published in 1988, which he edited as the leader of an author collective. In the same year, Stiehler, together with Irmgard Konzag and Hugo Döbler, published the textbook Theory and Methodology of Sports Games Basketball, Football, Handball, and Volleyball .

In 1990 Stiehler retired. As a functionary, he was deputy chairman of the German handball association of the GDR.
