After his brother's untimely death, his mother allowed him to pursue his career choice freely. Hugo's career aspiration was to study law. He enrolled at the University of Tübingen and had been a member of the Academic Association Igel Tübingen since the summer semester of 1886 . He then completed his legal traineeship in Heilbronn, Stuttgart and Geislingen from 1892 to 1893. In Stuttgart he finally opened a law firm as a lawyer. Music and Hugo Wolf

Hugo was musically gifted, so he received music lessons at the Heilbronn high school. He was further promoted by the Bohemian violinist and conductor Ernst Maschek, who was artistic director of Singkranz from 1857 to 1879.

Karl Grunsky (1871–1943), German historian and music writer ... described in his 1914 Nekrolog the influence of Henriette Faißt on her artistically inclined son Hugo: "Standing in the reality of life, she believed ... to curb Hugo's artistic inclinations" . Especially the connection between Hugo Faißt and Hugo Wolf: “The two Hugos were connected by something like a soulmate, and it was therefore natural that Faißt introduced the new friend to his mother as soon as possible - the two of them were still traveling in February 1894 to Heilbronn ” . Hugo Wolf was important to Hugo Faißt - so it later became his "life's task to support Hugo Wolf" .
