Hugo II of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Hugo II of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg , the one-eyed († 1305 or 1309 ), was a count who descended from the Count Palatine of Tübingen through the Count of Montfort .

Live and act

Count Hugo II was next to five daughters the only son of Hugo I von Werdenberg-Heiligenberg and Mechtild von Neuffen as well as grandson of Rudolf I von Montfort-Werdenberg († 1243). It was first mentioned in a document in 1275 or 1277.

Like his father, he was closely associated with the House of Habsburg . How well he was respected by King Rudolf I can be seen from the fact that he and others were chosen in January 1281 to accompany the king's daughter Clementia to her fiancé Karl Martell in Naples . In the dispute between the Habsburgs and the up-and-coming Zurich, with the St. Gallen abbot Wilhelm von Montfort and with the Bishop of Constance Rudolf von Habsburg-Laufenburg , in the battle of Duke Albrecht I for the crown: Hugo II used his whole person everywhere. In April 1292 he saved the Austrian duke Winterthur , which had been heavily besieged by Zurich , then besieged the abbot Wil with duke Albrecht and conquered it after two months of resistance. Here, on the field of Wil, he and his cousin Rudolf II von Werdenberg-Sargans were knighted by Albrecht.

Count Hugo was there in 1295/96 when the uprising of the Austrian nobility, which was primarily directed against the favor of the Swabian lords at the ducal court, was suppressed and again - almost naturally - at the battle of Göllheim , where Duke Albrecht won the crown from King Adolf von Nassau , and at the coronation in Aachen (1298). In gratitude for this loyal service, he, like his father, is said to have been given the bailiff in Upper Swabia. Hugo II was mentioned in a document for the last time at the end of July 1305.

Hugo II was married to Eufemia von Ortenburg , the daughter of Friedrich I von Ortenburg and his wife Adelheid von Görz . The couple had the following children:

  • Hugo IV. Cocles, Count von Werdenberg (* 1305 or 1308; † 1328 or 1334) ∞ Anna von Wildenberg
  • Heinrich II. Von Werdenberg, Bishop of Constance; elected but not confirmed Bishop of Constance
  • Albrecht I. von Werdenberg-Heiligenberg ∞ Katharina von Kiburg
  • Agnes, Countess of Werdenberg ∞ Rudolf I, Count of Hohenberg
  • Heinrich III., Count of Werdenberg-Alpeck ∞ Agnes of Württemberg
  • Rudolf III, Count of Werdenberg

Due to his close connection with the Duke and King Albrecht, Hugo II was probably induced to name the youngest of his three sons Albrecht, and this youngest son has particularly distinguished himself.
