Hugo K. Sievers

Hugo Konrad Sievers (born October 23, 1903 in Rengo ; † 1972 ) was a Chilean naturalist of Hamburg descent. He was the founder of the Chilean University of Veterinary Medicine and in 1955 the country's minister of agriculture.

Sievers graduated from the University of Chile and became a veterinarian in 1925. From 1926 he conducted research in Argentina and from 1928 in Brazil at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute . After further research at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, he received his doctorate in 1929 at the Institute for Tropical Diseases in Hamburg .

On behalf of the Chilean government and the University of Chile, Sievers traveled to Peru , Mexico , the USA , Japan , China , Korea , Indochina , India , Egypt and Italy, among others . He was chairman of the Chilean Academy of Sciences and a member of many other societies.
