Hugo Knauer

Hugo Knauer (born February 17, 1924 in Gnadental , then Romania (now Ukraine ), † June 29, 2008 ) was a German politician and mayor of Herdecke for 33 years .

Knauer, from a German family in Bessarabia , was a teacher by profession and was rector of the Schraberg elementary school in Herdecke. Knauer's political activity began in 1961 when he became a council member for the SPD , to which he belonged for 52 years. In 1964 he was elected Mayor of Herdeck. Knauer replaced Otto Hellmuth in the office. He held this office continuously until 1997. His successor was Hans-Werner Koch (SPD). The intention to name a school after Knauer sparked controversy. The school was eventually renamed after him.

Honors

On December 11, 2003 he was named the honorary ring bearer of the city of Herdecke .
