Hugo Rietveld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo M. Rietveld (born March 7, 1932 in The Hague , † July 16, 2016 in Alkmaar ) was a Dutch crystallographer . The Rietveld method named after him goes back to him .

Life

After his parents emigrated to Australia , Rietveld studied at the University of Western Australia and received his doctorate under the supervision of Ted Maslen. The topic was neutron diffraction on single crystals of p -diphenylbenzene . After completing his doctorate, he returned to the Netherlands and carried out research on the reactor in Petten . It was there that his first computer program for refining neutron powder diagrams was created. It was written in the Algol programming language . The method was then rarely used by other scientists. In 1975 Rietveld left science and became a librarian at the reactor center in Petten.

Rietveld method

The method became more widespread when a first Fortran version of the software became available (Alan Hewat, 1971). The big breakthrough came when the much more common X-ray diffraction was applied to powder diagrams .
