Hugo Scheele (born June 15, 1881 in Arnsberg , † September 10, 1960 in Greifswald ) was a German painter , graphic artist and writer.

Life

Villa Baltica 2007

Hugo Scheele was born as the son of the lawyer Carl Scheele (1850–1920) and his wife Elisabeth, b. Seneca (1854–1915), born in Arnsberg in the Sauerland (Westphalia). He had a sister (Kete) and a brother (Max). The three children were raised strictly in the Catholic faith.

Hugo Scheele first studied medicine in Leipzig. But it was his wish to become a painter. His father finally agreed and Hugo began taking painting and drawing lessons in Leipzig. In addition, he had to take evening courses at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management. He then went to Düsseldorf and Weimar to study painting there. He finished his studies in Weimar in 1908.

After the death of his father in 1920 he married Rosel Müller. Since she belonged to the Evangelical Church, the father had always refused to consent to the marriage. In 1921 Hugo and Rosel Scheele moved to the island of Usedom . Scheele had bought the Villa Baltica from an impoverished beach photographer in Zempin. His doctor had advised him to move to the country after a serious illness.

Hugo Scheele had inherited a not inconsiderable fortune from his father and was therefore able to devote himself fully to painting. With the inflation this fortune was soon consumed and Hugo Scheele was forced to earn a living together with painting. At the same time, they rented rooms to holiday guests and soon afterwards set up exhibition rooms. Hugo Scheele sold his pictures and received repeat orders from the public sector. This continued after the end of the war. He painted oil paintings and watercolors . He painted landscapes, stories from the everyday life of fishermen as well as portraits and caricatures. He was also engaged in linoleum and woodcuts . The watercolor postcards, which were often sent as holiday greetings, are particularly worth mentioning.

Hugo Scheele died on September 10, 1960 as a result of an operation. His urn rests in his wife's family grave in the Eisenach cemetery . Rosel left the GDR in 1961 and moved to Münster . She died on June 18, 1977.

Awards

Hugo Scheele is said to have been proposed for the Villa Romana Prize ( Villa Romana ). However, he declined the nomination. If he wished, the prize should instead be given to an artist in need.
