Hugo Scheu ( Lithuanian Hugo Šojus ; born April 1, 1845 in Memel , East Prussia Province , Kingdom of Prussia ; † July 25, 1937 in Šilutė , Lithuania ) was a German landowner and patron of the city of Šilutė (Heydekrug).

Life

Shy ancestors were shipowners in Memel. Scheu's father had acquired the Adlig-Heydekrug estate, which covered 800 hectares. Scheu was appointed General Landscape Director of East Prussia in 1920 to succeed Wolfgang Kapp . After the cession of the Memelland from the German Reich, he was the district administrator in Heydekrug several times .

Scheu was interested in the Lithuanian language , Lithuanian culture, customs and traditions and was active as a collector of Prussian-Lithuanian folklore. He provided land free of charge for the hospital, fire department, church , elementary school and other public institutions. A memorial was erected in Šilutė to commemorate him . A street and the museum located in the manor house are named after him.

Hugo Scheu was friends with the writer and playwright Hermann Sudermann . They met in Berlin in 1888 and kept writing to each other. Correspondence is kept in the National Library of Lithuania .

family

Hugo Scheu's son Erich Scheu was a district doctor in Heydekrug and at times district administrator in Heydekrug.

His grandson Werner Scheu also became a doctor and inherited the estate in 1937. During the Nazi era he was a member of the NSDAP and the Waffen SS . In 1941 he actively participated as an officer in a mass murder of 220 Lithuanian Jews - Scheu killed at least four people himself at the time - and was therefore legally sentenced to ten years in prison in 1964. In the post-war period he ran the “Möwennest” children's health resort on the North Sea island of Borkum , where children were harassed and tortured.
