Hugo (Ugo) Schiff (born April 26, 1834 in Frankfurt am Main , † September 8, 1915 in Florence ) was a German-Italian chemist . He is a brother of the physiologist Moritz Schiff .

Hugo Schiff studied chemistry with Friedrich Wöhler in Göttingen . It was in 1857 with a thesis about some of naphthyl and phenyl doctorate . From 1857 to 1863 he had a teaching position at the University of Bern .

In 1863 he went to Italy, first to Pisa (1863 to 1864), where he worked on aldehydes and discovered the imines ( Schiff's bases ) named after him and the detection of aldehydes through the Schiff's sample named after him .

From 1864 to 1876 he lived in Florence, where he and Stanislao Cannizzaro founded the Gazzetta Chimica Italiana , the leading Italian chemical journal for 120 years.

In 1877 he became professor of chemistry in Turin, but returned to Florence in 1879, where he founded the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Florence . In 1905 he isolated the first ketene, diphenyl ketene . He also worked on amino acids and the biuret reaction . The Hugo Schiff International Store House still exists at the University of Florence today .
