Hugues Laurent

Hugues Laurent (born June 24, 1885 in Alfortville , France , † September 16, 1990 in Tourrettes-sur-Loup ) was a French film architect and short film director , a veteran of domestic cinematography .

Live and act

Laurent, who came from a parish near Paris , had studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and came to film in 1904. At the beginning of his career he designed the decorations for an abundance of one- or two-acts. Laurent also designed the backdrops for theater performances and worked as a painter. Decades later, in 1941, he was appointed chief outfitter at Pathé and Gaumont. In the early sound film era, there were also two collaborations with Jean Renoir , for whose productions “Boudu - rescued from the waters” and night asylum Laurent in 1932 and 1936 (here together with colleague Eugène Lourié ) designed the sets.

After the Second World War , Hugues Laurent also taught as a professor at the IDHEC film school . Most recently he was also President of the Commission Studios-Décors at the Commission Supérieure technique. Laurent did not give up this office until 1966. In addition to his work as a production designer, Hugues Laurent has also directed over 300 short films. At the beginning of the 1960s he withdrew from film and spent the rest of his life in the French Maritime Alps . There he died at the age of 105.
