In Hinduism , Buddhism and other Asian religions, 108 is a sacred number:

• A mala usually consists of 108 pearls to repeat a mantra .
• Hindu deities have 108 names. The recitation of the 108 names accompanied by the counting of the 108 mala beads is considered a sacred act and is often performed in religious ceremonies.
• As Nataraja, Shiva dances his cosmic dance with 108 different dance steps.
