Hunger stone

The Hungerstein is a protected monument in the town of Gernrode, part of the town of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located northwest of the Gernröder old town, north of Suderöder Straße and is listed as a monument in the local monument register.

Architecture and history

The Hungerstein is about 1.20 meters high and also wide and was donated in 1848 by the Suderöder owner of the Stiftsmühle a little further south-west , Friedrich Bormann , to commemorate the drought and unemployment in 1846/47. Bormann had found the red-brown boulder while plowing his field. There is an inscription on the stone showing the prices of wheat , rye , barley and oats in 1847 .

The inscription reads: SPARE
In 1847 the grain prices were as follows:
6 Reichstaler the bushel of wheat
5 1/4 "" "rye
4" "" barley
2 1/2 "" "oats

At the bottom right there is the inscription referring to the founder of the stone: Fr Bor. In addition, there should be a P for Prussia and an A for Anhalt on the stone . The border between the two states ran a little west of the stone. The inscription SPARE is a reminder to prepare for times of emergency and to save.

To the right of the stone there is a plaque that reproduces the text of the inscription and provides explanations of the dimensions and prices. A bushel is given there as about 104 liters . For the Reichstaler it is stated that one Reichstaler corresponds to about 12 to 15 marks, whereby the table apparently refers to the mark of the GDR .
