The Huoshenshan Hospital ( Chinese  火神 山 医院 , Pinyin Huǒshénshān Yīyuàn  - "Fire God Mountain Hospital") is an emergency hospital in the Caidian District of the Chinese city of Wuhan , which was built in 8 days from January 23 to February 2, 2020 and started operations on February 3, 2020. The hospital is to be run by 1,400 medical professionals from the People's Liberation Army . A similar emergency hospital, Leishenshan Hospital , was under construction in Jiangxia District from January 24, 2020, and opened on February 6.

history

The trigger for the decision to build the hospital was the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in the city of Wuhan in December 2019 , triggered by the "novel coronavirus" SARS-CoV-2 . While it initially appeared that the outbreak was localized and the number of sufferers stagnated at just over 40 people, the number of known infected increased from January 16, 2020 and it became clear that the virus was infected by Is transferable from person to person. On January 24, 2020, the number of people known to be infected was over 1,000, several Chinese provinces were affected, and cases of infection had occurred abroad. In response to the rapid spread of the epidemic, the Chinese authorities largely quarantined the city of Wuhan on January 23, 2020 and sealed it off from the public transport system (rail, bus, air traffic). Since the existing hospital capacities in Wuhan were not sufficient to deal with the steadily increasing number of illnesses and suspected cases, and because the quarantine prevented transfers to other hospitals outside Wuhan, the construction of the first emergency hospital in Wuhan started. The model for the construction was the Xiaotangshan Hospital in Beijing, which was built as an emergency hospital during the SARS pandemic of 2002/2003 in a very short time.

On March 10, 2020, China's President Xi Jinping visited a command center next to the hospital to speak with medical staff and patients via video broadcast.

designation

On January 24, 2020, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua announced in a brief announcement that the hospital under construction in Caidian District would be named Huoshenshan . "Huoshenshan" was not the name of the location, but was derived from Huoshen ( 火神 ), the fire god from Chinese folk beliefs . An official explanation for the rather unusual naming was not given. The Chinese media and the Chinese Internet have speculated about various possible explanations. The virus can be inactivated by heat, and hence the name. The province of Hubei was part of the ancient Chinese state of Chu and the inhabitants of Chu derived their origin from Zhurong , the mythical god of fire and ruler of the south. The corona virus infects the lungs, one of the five functional groups in traditional Chinese medicine , the corresponding element of which is metal, which in turn can be defeated by fire.

Construction data

For the construction of the building in the shortest possible time, 7000 workers were recruited who worked day and night on the construction in a three-shift system. On February 2, 2020 it was reported that the new hospital was completed on schedule and, after various inspections, would start operations the next day.

The construction of the two emergency hospitals Huoshenshan and Leishenshan was via webcam as a live stream broadcast over the Internet. By January 30, 2020, over 40 million viewers in China watched the livestream . The audience followed the building with lively sympathy. Several particularly outstanding construction vehicles were given nicknames and were cheered on virtually in comments during their activities.

According to the government newspaper Yangtze Daily , about half of the two-story, 60,000-square-meter building consists of isolation wards . Accordingly, there are 30 intensive care units . In addition, the hospital has a special ventilation system and double-sided cabinets that allow employees to deliver materials without entering the room. The Paper newspaper wrote that a Chinese company donated “medicine robots” that can deliver drugs or bring samples.
