A special isolation ward (also high isolation ward ) is a hospital department or part of such a department for the isolation and treatment of patients with highly contagious infectious diseases such as viral hemorrhagic fever or smallpox .

Implementation practice

In case of occupancy (infections with Marburg virus , Ebola virus , smallpox , plague and cholera ), the stations are cordoned off and supplies are provided through special central lock areas . There is a slight negative pressure in the rooms , waste and waste water are autoclaved separately .

Germany

In Germany there are seven treatment centers in which patients can be treated with highly infectious pathogens. You are part of the permanent working group of the competence and treatment centers for diseases caused by highly pathogenic agents (STAKOB) at the Robert Koch Institute .

The special isolation ward of the Infectious Clinic of the Charité in Berlin is the largest isolation ward in Germany with 20 beds, with its own laboratory and operating theater . Vacuum stages and high-performance filters prevent contaminated air and pathogens from escaping into unprotected areas.

There are further treatment centers for patients with highly contagious diseases, each with two to six beds, at the University Clinic in Düsseldorf , at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg , at the University Clinic in Frankfurt am Main , at the St. Georg Municipal Clinic in Leipzig , and at the Schwabing Clinic in Munich and at the Robert Bosch Hospital in Stuttgart . The Medical Mission Clinic in Würzburg has a segregation facility at the isolation ward of the Tropical Medicine Department.
