geography
The granite ridge of Split Rock stretches through the park with large deposits of feldspar , which were mined for porcelain production until the park was founded and shipped on the Connecticut River . The mining area was reforested with pine trees. The Split Rock is the symbol of the park and a popular vantage point. Hurd Brook and Axelson Brook are two small streams that drain from the east and left to the Connecticut River. The park is still in the area of influence of the tides , the hills and rocks rise up to 70 m. Access to the park is via Middle Haddam Road / Moodus Road (151) and Hurd Park Road (439) .
history
After the State Park Commission was established in 1913 , Hurd State Park was one of the first areas to be acquired and protected in 1914 . A process even had to be initiated to revoke mining rights. It is named after a Scottish-American family who settled in Haddam. Originally only 150 acres (approx. 61 ha) in size, the park now covers almost 4.01 km². It is administered by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection .
