Hurst Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) on Hurst Spit , a headland in the English county of Hampshire . With the Needles Lighthouse he marks the western entrance to the Solent , a strait on the south coast of England .
history
Although it is said to have been in 1733 if a beacon at this location, begin the records of Trinity House until 1781, when merchants and shipowners with a petition have encouraged the construction of lighthouses in this stretch of coast. However, the contract to build three lighthouses (Hurst Point, St. Catherine's Point and Needles) was not awarded until 1785.
The first lighthouse was built on the southwest wing of Hurst Castle and went into operation on September 29, 1786. Since the beacon was hidden from some directions, an additional top light was built as a leading light line in 1812 .
The expansion of Hurst Castle, begun in 1865, required the construction of a new underfire. It stood on a round granite tower from 1866 to 1911 and on a steel structure from 1911 to 1997.
The top fire from 1812 was replaced in 1867 by a free-standing, 26-meter-high masonry tower , today's lighthouse. The beacon with a first order Fresnel lens was automated as early as 1923 and is now monitored from Trinity House headquarters in Harwich . As part of an extensive modernization, the tower received an additional beacon in 1997 . It went into operation in July. The previous lower light was then deleted and painted gray to avoid confusion.
Since 1974 the lighthouse has been listed as a Grade II Monument on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest .
Trivia
In 1978 the tower was used as a location for several episodes of the series Five Friends .
