Husain Ahmad Madani

Husain Ahmad Madani (born October 6, 1879 ; died 1957 ) was a political activist, Islamic scholar and supporter of Gandhi in the Indian struggle for independence. In 1892, at the age of 13, he entered the Islamic College in Deoband and was taught the principles of Sufism . After graduating, he emigrated with his family to Medina and taught the principles of Fiqh ( Usūl al-fiqh ), Hadith and Koran exegesis for 18 years . In 1919 he became the first president of the newly founded scholars' organization Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and held this position until his death in 1957. He opposed the partition of India and the construction of Pakistan . In 1954 he was one of the first to be awarded the Padma Bhushan (Order of the Lotus).
