Hwang Ji-u (born January 25, 1952 in Haenam , South Chŏlla Province ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Hwang Ji-u was born in Haenam during the Korean War . He spent his childhood in Kwangju . From 1972 he studied aesthetics at Seoul National University and joined the local literature group. In 1973 he was forcibly recruited for participating in the demonstrations against the then military dictatorship under Park Chung-hee and was only able to continue his studies in 1976.

In 1980 he took part in a competition organized by the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo and won with his poem Chronik (연혁). In the same year, the Kwangju Uprising occurred, which was violently suppressed by the military. Hwang Ji-u was one of the political activists who spread the news of the massacre in Seoul despite the ban. Because of his activities, he was finally forcibly de-registered and arrested.

His first volume of poetry was published in 1983, for which he received the Kim Suyŏng Prize. He has received numerous important awards for his work. Since 1994 Hwang Ji-u has been professor of creative writing at Hanshin University .
