Hydra Vein was a British thrash metal band from Brighton that formed in 1986 and split in 1990.
history
The band was formed in 1987 when bassist Damon Maddison left Deathwish to record his own material. He was joined by his brother Nathan, who was the drummer for Deathwish. Mike Keen was represented in the band as a singer. Together they recorded the demo The Reptilliad in July 1987 . Guitarists Dave "Deathwish" Brunt and Alan Wheatley-Crowe could be heard on this demo. The guitarists were noted with the name Jack Kartoffel in the credits, because both guitarists were involved in other projects and the aim was to avoid a conflict. The name was borrowed from a film. Pianist Thomas Foster designed the intro of the demo. As a result, the band reached a contract with Metalother Records . Guitarists Stephen Davis and Dan Ranger, whose brother Stuart Damon replaced Deathwish, also joined the band.
After a few months of rehearsal, the band entered Blue Box Studios in Hove in February 1988 to record their debut album, Rather Death than False of Faith . The album was released in November of the same year.
The band appeared on the Friday Rock Show on BBC Radio One . This caught the attention of Peter Mensch , who owned the Three Cherries label . With this label the album should be distributed in the USA . Due to internal label problems, however, it did not come to that, so Borivoj Krgin , owner of Mean Machine Records , took care of the matter. Some gigs followed in the UK to support bands like Sodom and Toranaga . After performing at the Level Festival in Brighton, Dan Ranger left the band. The band initially continued the other concerts as a group of four. At a concert with Candlemass in Bradford , the band decided to split up with Metalother and guitarist Davis.
The band signed a contract with RKT Records and released the second album After the Dream with this. The album was recorded at Derby Square Dance Studios in September 1989 and released a few months later. A year later the band broke up.
In 2007, both albums were re-released on Blackend . The four remaining members live and work across Europe . So far there are no plans for a reunion of the band. One of the reasons for this is also the death of singer Mike Keen.
style
The band plays classic 1980s thrash metal. The tempo of the songs is variable, with strong parallels to Slayer can be seen.
