The oak-leaved hydrangea or oak hydrangea ( Hydrangea quercifolia ) is a small shrub belonging to the hydrangea family . It is sometimes used as an ornamental plant because of the decorative flowers . The natural range is in the southeastern United States. It was naturalized in other areas of the USA.
description
The oak-leaved hydrangea forms 1 to 2 meter high, upright to spreading shrubs with initially finely reddish-tomentose hairy and later balding young shoots. The leaves are simple and have a stalk that is 2.5 to 6 centimeters long. The leaf blade is pinnately lobed, 8 to 20 centimeters long, up to 17 centimeters wide, with two to three egg-shaped to triangular pointed lobes on each side. The upper side of the leaf is wrinkled, the underside more or less densely hairy whitish-tomentose with clearly protruding nerves. The autumn color is striking red to brownish red.
The flowers are arranged in conical to almost rounded panicles 15 to 20 centimeters long . The few sterile flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters wide and white. They later turn reddish in color. The fertile flowers are also white.
The species blooms from July to September.
Distribution and location
The natural range is in the southeastern United States. It was introduced in other areas of the US, such as Connecticut and North Carolina . It grows in steppes , dry forests and species-rich forests on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shady locations. The species loves warmth and is usually frost hardy.
