The Sopramonte Cave Salamander ( Hydromantes supra montis , Syn. : Speleomantes supra montis ) is a salamander from the family of the lung lots Salamander (Plethodontidae). Its distribution area is in the eastern part of Sardinia .

features

The Sopramonte cave salamander is about 13 to 13.5 cm long. The muzzle is rounded. The feet are very large, the fingers and toes blunt and widened at the ends. The color and markings on the back are very variable. The basic color is dark brown to black with yellowish, gray-green or olive-green spots or marbling. The adult belly is light, usually with a varying number of dark spots.

distribution

The species has a small distribution area in central to northern Eastern Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro . There she lives mainly around the Gulf of Orosei and in the hinterland up to Sopramonte di Orgosolo .

habitat

From 106 to 1360 m above sea level. There are oak forests , Mediterranean scrub ( maquis populated) and moderately grown rocky areas. The Sopramonte cave salamander can often be found under stones or in caves.

Way of life

Above ground only active in the period from late autumn to early spring. In late spring, the animals withdraw into subterranean gap systems and lay their eggs during this time, which the females guard until the fully developed young hatch.

Danger

Despite the small distribution area, the species is only slightly endangered and can often be found in large numbers in suitable places. Nevertheless, it is threatened by habitat destruction.
