The Hygrobatidae are a family of the freshwater mites ( Hydrachnidiae) within the mites (Acari). Representatives of the family live in springs , still waters and, above all, rivers .
features
The body is usually soft-skinned. The 2nd phalanx often has a peg and in both sexes the genital bowls sit on plates, these are connected to a plate in the male.
distribution
The Hygrobatidae are cosmopolitan and are only absent in the Australis . About 120 species are known in Europe, which are divided into four genera:
- Hygrobates with 18 species
- Atractides with approx. 100 kinds
- Maderomegapus and
- Mesobates each with one species.
Way of life
Hygrobates and Atractides species go through a parasitic phase in the larval stage and parasitize on various two-winged and caddis-fly species.
Systematics
The Hygrobatidae are within the acariformes parentage within the mites . The mites of the Hydrachnidiae group living in fresh water not only show convergent adaptations to the way of life in the water, but also represent a related group ( taxon ).
