The red from Rio ( Hyphessobrycon flammeus ) is a tropical ornamental fish from the order of the tetra . Similar to the yellow from Rio , it comes from the coastal rivers near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil , and it is sometimes found in rivers further inland such as the Rio Paraná . Its preferred habitat is the banks of the rivers. In Brazil, the red from Rio is on the list of critically endangered animals.

features

Reds from Rio grow up to four centimeters long and a maximum of four years old. Compared to the females, the males are slimmer and more colorful, the red pelvic and anal fins of the males are lined with black, in the females these fin tips are markedly lighter (sometimes yellowish) in color.

Aquarium keeping

Keeping and breeding in the aquarium is also unproblematic for hobby fish farmers. Since the red from Rio is a schooling fish , it should never be kept alone in the aquarium, but it needs plenty of opportunities to hide from its conspecifics, as otherwise there may be arguments, especially with older fish.
