Hypnum callichroum ( beautiful colored sleeping moss ) is a pleurocarpic deciduous moss from the Hypnaceae family .

features

Hypnum callichroum forms yellow-green, soft, loose, cushion-shaped lawns. The plants are up to 10 centimeters long and are more or less regularly pinnate. The stem leaves, which are about 2 millimeters long and 0.9 millimeters wide, have a lanceolate base, are long and finely pointed and strongly crescent-shaped to circular. They have no or a short double vein. The leaf margins are whole and flat. Branch leaves are shorter and narrower than the stem leaves. Pseudoparaphyllia are triangular-lanceolate to almost hair-shaped.

In the leaf wing there is a well-defined group of larger, inflated and hyaline or yellowish cells, in the middle of the leaf the cells are 5 µm wide and 10 to 15 times as long. The stem cross-section has a small-cell central cord, the outer layer of the stem bark consists of enlarged hyaline cells.

Perichätialblätter are weakly longitudinally folds, ribless and long and finely pointed. The red, 1.5 to 2 centimeters long and twisted Seta carries an inclined to horizontal, elongated-cylindrical and curved spore capsule. The conical capsule lid is provided with a tip. Spores are 12 to 18 µm in size, greenish and smooth. Occasionally the moss will bear fruit.

Location claims and distribution

Hypnum callichroum grows on acidic to slightly calcareous subsoil in damp, partially shaded locations in mountain forests.

In Austria and Switzerland it occurs at altitudes of around 800 to 2000 meters in the Alps; in Germany, the occurrences are limited to southern Bavaria and the southern Black Forest. There are other occurrences in the mountains of the rest of Europe, in parts of Asia and in North America.
