The genus Hypseleotris includes about a dozen freshwater goby species from the family of sleeper gobies , which are reminiscent of small carp fish (Cyprinidae) with their laterally compressed body shape .

features

The genus is characterized by several morphological features. It is characterized by a strongly laterally compressed head and body, a small mouth that does not reach the front edge of the eye socket, an elongated body cavity with several anal fins that precede the first hemal vertebral process (ventral hemal spine), and an egg-shaped spot the dorsal base of the pectoral fin.

The gobies within the genus are between 6 and 12 cm long, depending on the species. They show gender dimorphism . Color and pattern change seasonally (for example with courtship) and with increasing age of the fish.

Occurrence and habitat

The genus Hypseleotris has a large distribution area from South Africa to Japan and from Southeast Asia to Australia. The species H. cyprinoides occurs there widespread, while H. compressa is only known from Australia and New Guinea. The occurrence of the other species is locally limited to Australia. Most species live permanently in fresh water, although the species with a large distribution area have a certain salt water tolerance and their larval development takes place through drifting in salty waters near the coast.

Systematics

The specimens of the fish described by Herre in 1927 as Hypseleotris pangel have been missing since the Second World War.

The systematics of about a dozen species within the genus Hypseleotris , especially the non-Australian species, is still the subject of research. Fishbase lists 16 species within the genus Hypseleotris , while Thacker & Unmack (2005) according to morphological and molecular studies H. dayi , H. leuciscus (Bleeker, 1853) , H. tohizonae Steindachner, 1880 and H. guentheri (Bleeker, 1875) not as a separate species, but as a synonym for Hypseleotris cyprinoides . It is doubtful whether the species Hypseleotris compressocephalus Chen & Zheng, 1985 from China, Hypseleotris everetti (Boulenger, 1895) and Hypseleotris hotayensis (May, 1978) from North Vietnam belong to the genus . The museum specimens by H. pangel Herre, 1927, have been missing since the Second World War, so that a validation of this type is practically impossible.

Species from the Kimberley region (Australia) , most closely related to H. compressa :

Other types:

The genus, ie an ancestor of H. cyprinoides , originally spread from Southeast Asia via marine habitats to Australia. This is where the Australian freshwater species developed, forming a monophyletic group. One clade spread in the northwest (north coast and Kimberley , Pilbara ), another in southeast Australia (east coast and Murray-Darling basin). From there, other undescribed species are known.
