Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos

Hyrnethion ( Greek  Ὑρνήθιον ) was the name of the Heroon of Hyrnetho near Epidauros in the Peloponnese in Greece . Pausanias reports that it was on the road that led from the Asclepius shrine to the port city of Epidaurus , and that Hyrnetho was buried here. There were old olive trees here and it was forbidden to take broken branches with you.

This sanctuary was probably located on the Koloti hill on the western outskirts of Epano Epidavros. About 50 m north of the old route of the national road Ethniki Odos 70 from Lygourio via Agios Andreas to Archea Epidavros is the excavation on the eastern side of Koloti. An unpaved path leads in a semicircle around the excavation site. About 20 m north of the dirt road are the ruins of the Agios Nikolaos monastery and a Byzantine hall church . Below the hill there is a spring to which a pilgrimage route leads.

In 1994 emergency excavations were carried out on the eastern slope of the hill. Here, fragments and building remains from the Early Helladic II (2800–2300 BC) were discovered on the surface . A broken Cycladic marble idol of the Spedos type was also found. The figure has two holes on the left thigh that were apparently used for repair. Human bones were also found.
