Hyundai Wia ( proper spelling : Hyundai WIA ) is a mechanical engineering company from South Korea with headquarters in Changwon and is part of the Hyundai Motor Group . The products offered include machine tools , automotive parts and armaments.
The company was founded in 1976 as the Kia Machine Tool Company and began producing machine tools the following year. The production of drive trains for vehicle construction within the Hyundai Group began in 1979. The company's name was changed to Kia Heavy Industry in 1996. Further name changes to WIA Corporation and Hyundai Wia Corporation were completed in 2001 and 2009. In 2011, Hyundai Wia went public.
The company's machine tool division specializes in CNC lathes and machining centers and sees itself as one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in the world and market leader in its home country of Korea.
The corporate division for automotive supply mainly supplies the group-internal brands Hyundai and Kia with complex assemblies such as drive trains, axles and clutches . Furthermore, Hyundai Wia describes itself as the only manufacturer of automobile engines in Korea. Both gasoline and diesel engines and turbochargers are manufactured.
Hyundai Wia is also one of the major defense equipment manufacturers in Korea. In addition to artillery guns for land and water vehicles, landing gear for combat aircraft, but also for civil use, as well as remote-controlled and automated weapon systems for ground combat are produced.
