I'm a Mess ( English for "I'm a mess") is a pop song by the American singer Bebe Rexha . It was released as the third single from their debut album Expectations on June 15, 2018. The song was produced by Jussifer and Devon Corey. According to the singer, the song is about accepting your own shortcomings - even celebrating them because it is they that make us human and unique.
background
I'm a Mess contains an interpolation of the song Bitch , published in 1997 by Meredith Brooks . It was written by Rexha with Justin Tranter and Jussifer , while the latter also produced it with Devon Corey . The track was recorded at Westlake Recording Studios and was first played on her Instagram profile in September 2017 .
In an interview with the online database " Genius.com " Rexha explained that the idea for the song came from the fact that she appeared completely broken in the studio the following morning due to a love-out and Tranter said that she was sorry but today it would be a total mess (in English "such a mess"). Tranter would have replied: "That is the song title". In the song they tried to process the days when you wake up in the morning and don't get out of bed in a good mood; cannot approach the day highly motivated. However, one should not sink into negativity, but rather face these imperfections positively and see the good in them. The lyrics were created while Rexha Tranter was giving the reasons for her grief and, according to her statement, were transformed into the finished lyrics within 2 hours.
Content and music
The song is based on a 4/4 time signature and the tempo is 97 bpm . The song is introduced by a prelude in which a guitar can be heard. Rexha then begins with the first stanza. A constant clap and irregularly recurring trap sounds are then added to the instrumental. After 25 seconds a pre-chorus begins, which at first only consists of Rexha's voice and a piano, in the second round it is supported by a choir. The refrain follows with a trap beat, which is accompanied by vocals in the first half and almost instrumental in the second. After the structure has been run through a second time after the chorus, a 10-second interlude begins, which focuses on the choir, before the hook is intoned one last time. Like the intro, the outro is taken over by a guitar.
According to Rexha, the first stanza deals with everyday insecurity and the struggle with oneself, having to get up despite depression. The pre-chorus should then represent the typical encouragement from friends and family who want to build up according to the motto “everything will be fine, everything will be wonderful”. The refrain embodies the consequences of a breach of trust and the importance that trust represents.

reception
criticism
Radio Energy describes the song as snotty and rocky. Rhexa sings there about the separation from the lover and how it makes her go insane, so that she ends up falling into slaps. The beat is flowing and relaxing and the voice of Rhexa can be clearly recognized in the song.
Chart placements
The song developed to a minor success for the time being by only reaching the Canadian download charts. At the end of July 2018, the song also received placements in Ireland, Great Britain and the USA. Only one month later, and thus three months after its release, the single finally caught on in Central Europe and made it into the top 100 in Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
