iKON ( Korean 아이콘 ) is a K-pop group signed to YG Entertainment and founded in 2015. In 2013 the group was introduced as Team B by the survival show WIN: Who Is Next . After losing to Team A (now known as WINNER ) on the show , they appeared on the 2014 survival show Mix & Match , which determined the final seven members of the iKON group.

The name iKON was announced at the beginning of the Mix & Match show . It can be derived from the intention to become an 'icon for Korea', a symbol for Korea, which is why the group uses a 'K' instead of a 'C' in the name.

iKON officially debuted on September 15, 2015 with their download single "My Type" from their first studio album "Welcome Back " .

history

Before the debut

Before founding iKON, BI appeared in MC Mong's 2009 song "Indian Boy". They performed the song together at the 2009 SBS Dream Concert and You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook .

Koo Junhoe appeared on the variety show Star King at the age of 13 , as well as on the first season of the talent show K-Pop Star , both shows were broadcast on the Seoul Broadcasting System  (SBS).

2013: "WIN: Who Is Next"

Through WIN: Who Is Next , the then Team B was put in the spotlight for the first time as a group. It consisted of the current members BI, Bobby, Kim Jinhwan, Koo Junhoe, Song Yunhyeong and Kim Donghyuk. In WIN, they competed with their opponents, Team A, for the chance of the first debut since that of Big Bang , the first boy band of YG Entertainment , in 2006. The losing team was promised to either be disbanded or reassembled . Team B lost, and Team A debuted as the band WINNER .

2014: Mix and Match

In June there were rumors that there would be another survival show with Team B. Two months later this was officially confirmed by YG and the concept of Mix and Match was released, with confirmed participation by Team B. More details about the show were announced at the official press conference held on September 2nd. Three new trainees were introduced, Jung Jinhyeong, Jung Chanwoo and Yang Hongseok. The format of the show would lead the way to the debut of iKON, YG Entertainment 's upcoming band. Along with the new name, Yang Hyun Suk also announced that BI, Bobby and Kim Jinhwan were designated members. The other three members of Team B therefore had to fight for one of the four places together with the other trainees. iKon's official line-up would be determined with a voting system (30% of the votes from the jury, which consisted of other YG artists, and 70% from the audience.) Voting began in October, starting with official fan meetings in Japan on October 5, 2014, China on October 11, 2014 and Korea on October 17, 2014, followed by an “on-site” voting during the third, and final, match of all participants on October 22, 2014, and ended with an online Voting, which took place on October 30th and 31st, 2014.

On November 1st, YG released a schedule showing when the four members would join iKON, the last member being released during the ninth episode of Mix and Match. Junhoe was the first to be confirmed as the fourth member by potential candidates. The following day, Yunhyeong was confirmed as the fifth member. On November 6th, Chanwoo was announced as the sixth member of iKON. The final episode of Mix and Match aired at 11:00 KST, with Donghyuk confirmed as the last member of the band.

2017 – today: Name change of some members and B.I's exit

On May 16, YG Entertainment released a teaser video for "NEW KIDS: BEGIN", which will also be the title for the upcoming single album. This was again released on May 22nd and is said to be just one of many albums to be released during the year. In addition to the publication, some members have also changed their names: Jinhwan becomes Jay , Yunhyeong becomes Song , Donghyuk is now DK , Chanwoo becomes Chan .

On June 12, 2019, BI announced its exit from the group via Instagram. YG Entertainment confirmed B.I's decision a little later and at the same time announced that his contract with the agency had also been terminated.
