IMADEC (full company name: IMADEC Executive Education GmbH ) is a private provider of in-service training for executives in Vienna , Austria .

history

IMADEC was founded in 1991 as International Management Development Consulting . For its early years the school was a partner of California State University, Hayward (CSUH); the academic degrees were initially only awarded by the CSUH. From 1996, in cooperation with the daily newspaper Die Presse, the International Gary S. Becker Prize was awarded for innovative economic essays, which were selected by a committee made up of international economists and business people under the leadership of the Nobel Prize winner.

In 2001 IMADEC was accredited as the second private university in Austria.

The contract between IMADEC and California State University, Hayward was terminated in 2002 because of differences of opinion. The campus newspaper "The Pioneer" wrote that it was about financial matters and academic qualifications of professors: Joksch had criticized the qualifications of CSUH professor Kurt Leube , on the other hand, the management of IMADEC was criticized by the CSUH.

In 2005, IMADEC lost state approval after a number of deficiencies were complained about. “The personnel structure, the organizational and decision-making structures, the quality assurance system and the medium-term financial security, which could not be adequately proven, were affected,” said the Accreditation Council.

Beginning with courses of a university character

In September 1999 IMADEC in Austria was given the right to offer a university course with the academic degree MBA . This MBA program was also accredited by FIBAA from 1996 to the beginning of 2005 .

Temporary accreditation as a private university

IMADEC's state accreditation as a private university with three postgraduate courses began on January 2, 2001 and was initially limited to 5 years (2001–2006: IMADEC private university ). The extension was requested shortly before the deadline, but the accreditation expired on January 1, 2006. In May 2006 the application was rejected for the first time: this was justified with missing documents. Despite the submission of various documents at a later date, the Austrian Accreditation Council finally rejected the application for renewed accreditation in August 2006 because the requirements according to § 2 Paragraph 1 UniAkkG were not met. The Accreditation Council obtained the deletion of the impermissible company name IMADEC University at the Vienna Commercial Court in 2007 .

Illegal award of honorary degrees

On April 28, 2006, the Austrian Administrative Court ruled that an honorary doctorate (Honorary Doctor of Business Administration , abbreviated DBA ) awarded by IMADEC to Alexandre Lamfalussy in 2003 was illegal because private universities are not allowed to award honorary degrees. The award of academic degrees is only standardized in the UniAkkG in connection with degrees and does not provide for any regulation on the award of academic honors. This means that other honorary doctorates awarded by IMADEC are also to be regarded as invalid, which, among others, Arnold Schwarzenegger (DBA), Franz Vranitzky (DBA), Wim Duisenberg (DBA) and Siegbert Alber ( LL.D. ) had received (see for more details here ). According to the current interpretation of the judgment, all other academic honorary degrees awarded by IMADEC such as MLE hc , MBA hc , LL.M. hc , but also academic honorary titles such as honorary senator or honorary citizen are invalid.

Nevertheless, in October 2011, the former Mexican President Vicente Fox was awarded an honorary doctorate ( Doctor of Laws ) at a graduation ceremony .

Development after losing university status

On August 28, 2006, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture decided that the three IMADEC study programs could be continued as courses of a university character . This form of state recognition was originally supposed to expire at the end of 2010, but was extended in February 2010 to the end of 2012. Applications for approval of university courses could only be submitted until the end of 2003. Since IMADEC had the status of a private university at that time, applications for university courses would also have to be submitted to the Accreditation Council. According to the Accreditation Council, the application for reaccreditation was only submitted shortly before.

Bankruptcy proceedings

On June 18, 2010, the bankruptcy of IMADEC Executive Education GmbH was opened at the Vienna Commercial Court at the request of a creditor . On August 26, 2010, the court approved a reorganization plan and lifted the bankruptcy. Accordingly, the creditors receive 100% of their claims in several installments within 2 years. On October 13, 2014, new insolvency proceedings were rejected due to lack of assets.

owner

IMADEC is a limited liability company ; the exact company name changed several times. Various owners have been involved over the years. Currently (2012) the managing director Christian Joksch is the absolute majority owner, other shareholders only have minor contributions.
