Instant Messaging and Presence Service

An Instant Messaging and Presence Service ( IMPS ) is an instant messaging - service , which is primarily designed for mobile devices. It is a further development of the Wireless Village Protocol, which is specified by the Open Mobile Alliance ( OMA ).

IMPS is based on XML , which is compressed with WAP Binary XML to around a tenth of the transmission size. The current version is 1.3.

Compatible cell phones

Many of the cell phones sold today are built with IMPS support. Support from the following devices is known:

  • Nokia : "My Presence" series
  • Motorola : "IM": V220, V500, V600, E398, V3
  • Sony Ericsson : "My Friends": J300i, F500i, K300i, K500i, K600i, K700i, K750i, K790i, K800i, K810i, K850i, S700i, T206, T630, T637, V800, W550i, W800i, W810i, W890i, W880i, W900i, Z500A, Z800, Z1010
  • Siemens : CX70, CX75, M65, SK65

There is also software from other providers for subsequent installation in the form of Symbian and Java ME software.
