IVAO ( I nternational V irtual A viation O rganization, German: "International Virtual Aviation Organization" ) is a non-profit organization in the field of virtual aviation .

IVAO operates an online network for virtual pilots and air traffic controllers who are connected to one another via the Internet and simulate global air traffic as realistically as possible. In particular, as far as technically possible, the applicable air traffic rules are mapped with the highest possible degree of reality.

history

The IVAO split off on December 16, 1998 from the former organization SATCO / SATNET , which later became today's VATSIM .

In August 2003 a development team was appointed, which from then on worked on the development of the new clients , IvAc (IVAO virtual ATC client) and IvAp (IVAO virtual pilot client) . The biggest milestone was achieved when IvAc was released for download in January 2004 and IvAp a few months later in October 2004 .

In April 2007 IVAO was registered as a non-profit making association in Belgium.

In 2018 IVAO celebrated its 20th anniversary with many additional events and a specially designed badge.

organization structure

IVAO is run 100% by volunteers. Volunteers who perform a defined task on the network are referred to as staff. The tasks are divided into five areas: Boards of Governor (German: Direction), Executive Council (German: Executive Council), Headquarters Departments (German: Departments), divisions and supervisors.

The Board of Governor is elected by the General Assembly for two years and is responsible for the rules of the organization. The elected governors set up the Executive Council, which is responsible for day-to-day business and monitoring the activity on the network and which is the highest operational authority. The Executive Council appoints the members of the departments and the directors of the divisions.

The individual departments of the headquarters are responsible, among other things, for creating international events, member administration, international public relations, international requirements for training and exams, creating and keeping up-to-date learning materials, creating world tours, the international Internet forum and developing new software.

Each participating country usually has its own division, such as IVAO Germany, IVAO Switzerland or IVAO Austria, or merged divisions such as IVAO North America for the USA and Canada. The individual divisions in turn have their own departments that are responsible for trainings and exams, training documents, events, local tours, member administration and their own sub-forum at the local level. While the individual divisions prepare and carry out training documents, training courses and tests on the basis of local aviation laws, the headquarters are based only on the international regulations prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO . The most active divisions include the Brazilian (3782 active members, as of July 31, 2020), the Spanish (2859 active members, as of July 31, 2020) and the German (2504 active members, as of July 31, 2020).

participation

Participation is free of charge and is open to anyone aged 16 or over, with the consent of the legal guardian from 13 years of age. Extensive, theoretical knowledge is not a prerequisite, but new members should acquire basic knowledge of aviation rules and procedures before they can move freely on the network. For this purpose, learning materials are made available free of charge, virtual meetings are held for newcomers, instructions for those interested in air traffic at airports and learning flight tours for those interested in pilots are offered. All members are recommended to work (as a pilot) with aeronautical charts, as this makes the entire operation easier and more realistic.

The choice of the simulated aircraft or helicopter as well as the desired location of the pilot activity, however, is up to everyone, there are only restrictions for some pilot positions that make higher demands, which is why an examination must have been taken beforehand.

Since the network is in principle accessible to people of various levels of experience, great attention is paid to imparting knowledge of flying. IVAO, for example, offers an extensive collection of documents on air traffic rules and procedures for download.

Technical requirements

The main technical requirement is a standard PC with Internet access . A headset is also recommended, but not mandatory.

For pilots, flight simulation software compatible with the IVAO network ( IVAN ) such as Microsoft Flight Simulator from version 2004, X-Plane or Prepar3D is also required.

The communication software IvAp for virtual pilots, the software IvAc , which simulates a radar screen for virtual air traffic controllers, and the online display software WebEye , which shows all pilots and controllers who are currently online on a world map, are provided free of charge by IVAO. The coordination between the air traffic controller and the pilot takes place mainly by voice communication using the Teamspeak 2 communication software , using the phraseology customary in air traffic .

Limitations of the simulated procedures

Due to the worldwide distribution and the high number of participants (IVAO total: around 220,000, IVAO Germany: around 23,000, as of July 2020), participation in IVAO is clearly structured and regulated. For example, the reenactment of hijacked aircraft , ethnic or religious conflicts and any form of warlike acts are strictly prohibited.

Pilot and pilot ranks

Virtual pilots and air traffic controllers have the opportunity to receive knowledge and skills from one of the voluntary training coordinators or trainers and then to take a corresponding voluntary test. By taking an exam, a member can advance to pilot and controller ranks, which, at least for pilot ranks, unlocks additional pilot positions.

There are six pilot and six pilot ranks that are based on real aviation. In addition, there are two more ranks each, but these are only temporarily awarded to some volunteers to fulfill certain tasks. The ranks are designed to gradually teach members theory and practice, as in reality. However, the members can also teach themselves the knowledge without training or exams using the freely accessible learning materials.

Events

On IVAO there are daily online days in different countries, during which all route control positions, such as CTR (center) and APP (approach) positions, as well as almost all TWR (tower) and GND (ground) positions are filled as far as possible . In addition, there is the opportunity to participate in events organized by the respective countries. At these events, all stations at an airport are also occupied.

Every year a record attempt called Crowded Skies is started on IVAO . Every year we try to set up as many simultaneous connections as possible. On December 10, 2016, 3,004 simultaneous connections were made.

year Number of connections
2008 1,451
2010 1,868
2011 2,304
2013 2,303
2014 2,532
2015 2,604
2016 3,004
2018a 2,928
2018b 2,938

There were no Crowded Skies in 2017. This was made up for on January 20, 2018 (shown in the table as "2018a" ). As part of the event for the 20th anniversary of the IVAO, a second Crowded Skies took place on December 1, 2018 (shown in the table as "2018b" ).

Tours

Members have the opportunity to take part in various air tours, which usually change annually. We offer local tours that only take place within one country to tours that go around the world. The aircraft to be used is more or less specified depending on the tour. For example, there are tours that dictate modern commercial aircraft , small general aviation aircraft , cargo aircraft , historic aircraft, helicopters , microlights, or long-haul aircraft . Depending on the tour, the flight rules to be used such as visual flight or instrument flight are also prescribed. The spectrum of tours ranges from learning tours for newcomers to very demanding tours for experienced professionals, in which certain flight procedures must be applied very accurately.

Every completed section of a tour (leg) must be submitted and is checked for correctness by one of the volunteers. After successfully completing a tour, there will be an award that everyone can see on the member's profile.
