Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing (IWK) is an institute of the FHO - Fachhochschule Ostschweiz on the Campus Rapperswil, Techpark Eichwies. In matters of materials and in plastics technology, it makes contributions to application-oriented research and development and provides services. The IWK maintains project-related cooperation with the economy and the education and university sectors.

The IWK was founded in 2005 at what was then the HSR Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil . founded and since then gradually expanded. It employs 7 professors and around 35 people in science, services and administration. The institute director is Frank Ehrig, his deputy Daniel Schwendemann.

Departments

There are the departments

Polymer chemistry with damage analysis (Samuel Affolter) and construction with plastics (Johannes Kunz) are further specialist skills of the IWK.

The activities cover the value chain from material and product development through tool and process technology , production of prototypes and pilot series and component testing to recycling of plastic products and multi-material solutions.

All departments of the IWK have laboratories for teaching , internships and project work .

Teaching

In teaching, the IWK represents the disciplines of materials science , manufacturing technology , technical mechanics , strength theory and plastics technology from the undergraduate bachelor’s degree and, since 2010, the subjects of the plastics technology advanced course in the machine technology / innovation course . Since autumn 2017, the Master Research Unit “Plastics Technology” has been offered as part of the Master’s degree ( MSc in Engineering ) .

In the area of continuing education , the IWK has been offering the CAS design and manufacture of plastic components with a focus on injection molding and additive manufacturing since autumn 2019 . It is part of the MAS Plastics Technology.

The IWK is also committed to vocational training in the field of plastics technology through cooperation with the vocational and advanced training center BWZ Rapperswil. It also runs the student lab "HSRlab" with the young people before their career choice the example of a product from the plastics engineering insight into the world of work can get a production plant.

Research and Development

The IWK works on application-oriented research and development projects in cooperation with industry and, on a case-by-case basis, partners from the education and university sectors at home and abroad . Half of this in the form of direct orders from industry and half as publicly funded projects, primarily through "Innosuisse" (Swiss Agency for Innovation Promotion). It also participates in European projects together with foreign partners.

The results of the application-oriented and scientific research activities at the IWK are presented in publications to experts.

The IWK takes part in trade fairs for the plastics industry such as Swiss Plastics Expo and Fakuma . Every year the IWK organizes the “Rapperswil Plastics Forum” with lectures and specialist information from universities and industry as well as laboratory presentations.

collaboration

In partnership with other institutions in the higher education sector, the IWK operates the “Innovation Cell for Plastics Technology IZ” in the WTT CHost (Knowledge and Technology Transfer Eastern Switzerland) and the “Competence Center in Construction KIB”.

The IWK is a member of Swiss Plastics (branch association of the Swiss plastics industry), the Swiss Plastics Cluster Friborg , the KATZ (plastics training and technology center Aarau), and the OIG (Eastern Switzerland interest group for the promotion of plastics professions).
