I Am a Promise: The Children of Stanton Elementary School is a 1993 American documentary film directed by Susan Raymond , a documentary filmmaker . The film about an elementary school in Philadelphia won an Oscar for " Best Documentary " in 1994.

action

Susan Raymond followed the students and teachers at Stanton Elementary School in north Philadelphia for a year on camera. The majority of the students are of African American descent, between five and ten years old, and almost all of them live below the poverty line . Teachers and staff strive to create a safe, reliable place for the children to learn. Hope for an improvement in the overall situation brings the new director position with a hands-on, very motivated teacher. But even the new director cannot fix all the grievances at once and reluctantly has to cut corners in some situations.

continuation

15 years after I Am a Promise , Susan and Alan Raymond were shooting at a school again, this time at a high school in Baltimore . This resulted in the documentary Hard Times at Douglass High: A No Child Left Behind Report Card , which continues the story from 1993 and shows that in 15 years there has not been much improved for poor African American children in America. The title of the sequel refers to George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind Act , an education law that is not undisputed in the United States.

Awards

At the 1994 Academy Awards , Susan and Alan Raymond won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. At the Emmy Awards in 1994, the film was awarded the Emmy for “Outstanding Informational Special”.
