I Loved a Soldier is an unfinished American film from 1936 directed by Henry Hathaway with Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer in the lead roles. The film is a remake of Lajos Biros Hotel Lviv city .

action

First World War, Galicia 1915. In the provincial town of Lemberg in the east of Austria-Hungary , only a few employees remained in a hotel after the withdrawal of the Austro-Hungarian troops . The Austrian lieutenant Paul Almasy, who overslept the march of his unit due to total exhaustion, disguises himself as a waiter in order not to be taken away as a prisoner of war if the Russian enemy took it. The Tsar General Yushkievich sets up his headquarters in the hotel , the area is riddled with Russian spies.

One of the Russians is in the process of forwarding the plan for the current Austrian positions to his commanding officer. The Austrian officer shoots the man and thus saves the document from the enemy. Anna Sedlak, the hotel's maid, helps him with this. She helps him to escape. When the Austrian army advanced again and drove out the Russian occupiers, Almasy was awarded a medal for bravery in the face of the enemy. The officer shares this award with Anna, with whom he has fallen in love and whom he plans to marry.

Production notes

The shooting took place at the beginning of 1936. There were script problems and serious arguments between the star Dietrich and her director Hathaway. The artistic differences meant that producer Ernst Lubitsch decided after a few weeks to stop the shooting. Nothing of the already shot footage seems to have survived.

Immediately afterwards, from mid-April to early July 1936, Dietrich and film partner Boyer appeared again in front of the camera and shot the melodious Trappist monk color melodrama The Garden of Allah .

In autumn 1938 it was decided to start a remake of the Biro fabric again. This time it was left with the original title Hotel Imperial , which was already featured in the 1927 silent film version with Pola Negri , and this time the Italian Isa Miranda and the Welshman Ray Milland were chosen as stars .
