Ian Michael Chappell (born September 26, 1943 in Unley , South Australia ) is a retired Australian cricketer . He comes from a family with a long cricket tradition. His maternal grandfather Vic Richardson and his brothers Greg Chappell and Trevor Chappell also completed test cricket matches for Australia .

Career

Ian Chappell played as a middle-order batsman during his active career . As the English BBC commentator John Arlott once noted, Ian Chappell's style of playing was characterized by the fact that he was more effective than elegant.

For Australia , he completed a total of 75 tests in which he scored 5,345 runs (42.42 runs per wicket ). Ian Chappell made his test debut in Melbourne against Pakistan in December 1964. Between 1971 and 1975 he was the captain of the Australian team in 30 tests . His last assignment for the Australian test team was in February 1980 against the English team . In addition, Ian Chappell completed 16 One-Day International Cricket Matches (ODIs) for Australia between 1971 and 1980 . In 1975 he reached the final of the first World Cricket Championship with the Australian ODI selection, which was lost to the West Indies cricket team .

Awards

Ian Chappell was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1976. In 2009 Ian Chappell and his brother Greg were inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
