Ian Steedman (* 1941 in London ) is an English economist , emeritus. Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University and since 2009 honorary member of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought .

He deals with economic theory and the history of economic thought. His work Marx after Sraffa (1971) as well as his numerous magazine articles have examined Marx's theory from Sraffa's theoretical point of view .

Steedman has also written books on international trade. Together with Stan Metcalfe he showed that the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson theorem cannot be upheld as soon as heterogeneous goods are allowed.

In several essays, Steedman analyzed the capital theory of outstanding economists such as William Stanley Jevons and Friedrich August von Hayek and showed that their theses only apply under very special conditions.

Steedman examined how Erik Robert Lindahl , Hayek, Kenneth Arrow , Debreu and Malinvaud deal with the concept of time in their theoretical presentations. In his book on time and consumption theory, Steedman rediscovered the important contribution made by Hermann Heinrich Gossen .
