Ibrahim Elmadfa (born September 21, 1943 in Jaffa ) is an Austrian nutritionist .

Scientific career

Elmadfa studied nutritional technology in Cairo until 1966 and nutritional science at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen from 1966 to 1968 . Here he received his doctorate in 1970 and habilitated in 1975 as the first professor nationwide in the field of nutritional physiology . In 1980 he accepted a professorship for human nutrition at the University of Giessen and in 1990 moved to the newly created chair for nutritional sciences at the University of Vienna , which he held until 2011.

Research activity

His research was devoted to the mode of action and the requirements of various nutrients in healthy and sick people. He also examined the nutritional status and eating habits of various population groups. Another focus of his work was the recording of the intake of food additives in the population and their extent.

Memberships

He was President of the Austrian Society for Nutrition and Chairman of the Austrian Codex Commission in the field of “New Foods”. From 2001–2017 Ibrahim Elmadfa was represented on the Presidium of the German Nutrition Society (DGE). Here he was significantly involved in the coordination and creation of the DA-CH reference values for nutrient intake. Several Austrian and European nutrition and health reports can also be traced back to his coordination and collaboration.

Elmadfa was a member of numerous international technical commissions, u. a. the UNICEF , the FAO , the UNDP and the WHO .

Publications

Elmadfa published over 400 scientific publications, as well as textbooks, specialist books and nutritional tables. From 2000 to 2011 he was editor-in-chief of the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism and the Forum of Nutrition .
