The Iddefjord granite ( Norwegian : Iddefjordsgranitt , Østfoldgranitt or Haldengranitt ) is extracted from the Iddefjord near Halden in the province of Viken in Norway . It was a so-called Fylkesstein of the former province of Østfold , a rock designation that is only given for a typical and important rock of the respective Norwegian province. It originated about 920 million years ago in the Precambrian .

Origin and description of the rock

The rock was not formed in a large pluton , but silica-containing magma penetrated into crevices and weak zones of the Baltic Shield, solidified next to metamorphic rocks in crevices and corridors that were a few decimeters up to about 100 meters wide. The deposit forms the northern part of the Swedish Bohus deposit , which extends from Lysekil in the south to the north of Haldens.

Iddefjord granite is a light gray, medium to fine grain granite. It consists of quartz , potassium feldspar , plagioclase and biotite .

The first quarries were already established in the 1840s and numerous other mining sites developed and a stone industry emerged, which was the largest in Norway about 100 years ago. With the beginning of the First World War , the demand for natural stone decreased in general and for this granite in particular. It never again reached the pre-war level there.

The production of stone blocks and paving stones decreased in the 1950 / 1960s. Today only two quarries are in operation.

use

This granite is mainly used in construction, both as paving stone , curb , for stairs, facades, tiles and sculpting . A special feature of this rock is that it can be easily split in all directions.

The sculptor Gustav Vigeland used the Iddefjord granite in the Vigeland Sculpture Park and created the 17 meter high monolith in the park from this natural stone . The main building of the Norwegian Technical University , now the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway , was built in 1910 with Iddefjord granite.
