Idea Cellular is an Indian wireless operator that operates in all 22 telephone districts of India. It is the third largest mobile company in India on GSM basis behind Airtel and Vodafone Essar . The company started in 1995 as a joint venture between Tatas , Aditya Birla Group and AT&T through the merger of Wings Cellular (active in Madhya Pradesh , Uttar Pradesh , Rajasthan ) and Tata Cellular and Birla AT&T Communications .

Originally, Idea only had a very limited GSM network in India, but with the acquisition of Escotel in 2004 it was able to expand its mobile network into a pan-Indian network and is now also active in West Bengal , Maharashtra , Goa , Gujarat , Andhra Pradesh , Madhya Pradesh , Chhattisgarh , Uttar Pradesh , Haryana , Kerala , Rajasthan and Delhi .

The company sells its products through the "Idea n 'U" stores.

Ownership

On April 10, 2006, the Aditya Birla Group announced the takeover of the 48.14% stake in the Tata Group. Aditya Birla currently holds 49.1% of the share capital. The Malaysian telephone company Axiata controls 14.99% of the shares of Idea, 10.6% are owned by Providence Equity Partners .
