Idlewild is a Scottish rock band .
history
The beginnings
Idlewild was founded in December 1995 at a student party in Edinburgh . Here Roddy Woomble (born August 13, 1976) and Colin Newton (born April 18, 1977) met. Similar social backgrounds and almost identical musical tastes (Pavement, Sonic Youth, REM, dEUS, Bob Dylan, Superchunk etc.) made both of them decide to start a band. Later that evening they were introduced to Rod Jones (born December 3, 1976), with him and his friend Phil Scanlon (born May 21, 1976) they founded Idlewild.
In January of the following year they played their first concert and recorded their first songs, which were positively received in the local press. Queen of the Troubled Teens one of the songs recorded in October was released in March of next year on the Human Condition Records label.
It's going up
In 1997 Phil left the band to concentrate more on his studies. Today he lives in Detroit and works successfully as a chemist. Bob Fairfoull (born August 6, 1976) took over his position on bass guitar .
With a later call from DJ Steve Lamacq to pass everything on to him about the unknown band, the rise began. A first appearance in London followed. After the recordings for the EP Captain and great reactions to the single Chandelier , which was released by Fierce Panda Records , they followed the call of the major labels and signed with Food Records / EMI .
Hope is important
The debut album Hope Is Important was released in October 1998. The release When I Argue I See Shapes reached the British charts as the band's first single in February 1999 . In the summer they played for the opening of the Scottish Parliament . The album features singer Salli Carson, who used to sing for Bleach .
100 Broken Windows
The next album, 100 Broken Windows , was released in April 2000 and marked the band's big breakthrough. The group then went on a major UK tour.
The Remote Part
After You Held the World in Your Arms was the first and so far only single to reach the top ten in Great Britain, The Remote Part , released on March 25, 2002, reached number three on the album charts, making it the band's most successful album to date. In the fall of 2002, Bob Fairfoull left the band, Gavin Fox and Allan Stewart joined them.
Warnings / Promises
Her next album, Warnings / Promises , was released on April 11, 2005. The album is noticeable for its quieter sound compared to previous albums. The collaboration with Parlophone ended in November 2005.
Make Another World / Post-Electric Blues
After Roddy Woomble released a solo album in 2006, the band released a new album called Make Another World in March 2007 on the indie label Sequel, a sub-division of Sanctuary Records . Since Sanctuary was bought by the Universal Music Group in 2007 and thus quasi ceased to exist, the band was back without a record deal. It was then decided to offer the fans the next album as a pre-order and thus partially finance the recordings. The fans who had pre-ordered Post Electric Blues received their CD (with an exclusive pre-order bonus track) in June 2009 and were named in the booklet as a thank you. In October 2009, the album was then released regularly, this time on the indie label Cooking Vinyl .
