Idrissa Dione , also called Eddie Dione , (born July 21, 1929 in Brazzaville ) is a former French boxer . He was European champion in professional welterweight boxers .

Career

Idrissa Dione comes from what was then the French Congo . He came to boxing there as a teenager and went to France in 1951 to become a professional boxer. His coach was Assane Diouf , who was himself a successful French professional boxer in the 1930s. He fought his first fight on October 1, 1951 in Nevers , where he defeated Rene Dumas by knockout. By October 1953, Idrissa Dione fought, mostly in France, 31 fights, of which he lost only two. He had pushed so far forward that he could challenge the French welterweight champion Robert Guivarch . This championship fight took place on November 23, 1953 in Paris and Idrissa Dione became French welterweight champion by winning points over Guivarch.

In the following two years Idrissa Dione fought her way through victories over the boxing with Turkish license Ziyaris Taki and Garbis Zakaryan in Istanbul and Beirut as well as his French compatriot Jean Ruellet , whom he beat on March 19, 1954 in Nevers on points and by a point victory above the German Freddi Teichmann in the European rankings further up. Although he boxed only a draw against Sauveur Chiocca on February 1, 1955 in Rouen and even lost on points on April 24, 1955 in Paris, he was nominated by the EBU as a challenger to the British European welterweight champion Wally Thom . Idrissa Dione achieved a masterpiece on June 23, 1955 in Liverpool when he beat Wally Thom safely on points in the "Hell of the Lion" and became the new European welterweight champion.

Idrissa Dione successfully defended this title on November 28, 1955 in Rotterdam by winning points over the experienced Dutchman Bep van Klaveren . On February 12, 1956, he had to defend his title in Grosseto , Italy . He met Emilio Marconi there against whom he lost on points and thus lost his European title.

In the following years Idrissa Dione fought 19 more fights. He boxed many tough opponents and lost more fights than he won. Most of them were but with championship titles decorated like Peter Waterman from England , Kid Dussart from Belgium , Duilio Loi and Bruno Visintin from Italy and Christian Christensen from Denmark , against whom he in his last fight as a professional boxer on March 20, 1958 in Copenhagen on points lost.

Nothing is known about his further life after his boxer career.
