Sauveur Chiocca (born March 12, 1929 in El Caillo, Venezuela , † April 26, 2015 ) was a French boxer . He was French champion of professional welterweight boxers.

Career

Sauveur Chiocca was born in Venezuela to a Venezuelan Indian woman and a Corsican. He grew up in Corsica and started boxing there as a teenager. In 1950 he became a professional boxer and played his first fight on November 16, 1950 in Paris against Jean Kieny, which he won on points. A first notable victory he achieved on September 29, 1951 in Ajaccio , when he knocked out the experienced Serge Barthelemy, who had already been in the ring with a large part of the European elite of middleweight boxers, in the 7th round. Sauveur Chiocca was basically not a knockout bat, but a super technician who usually won his fights through his flexibility and speed.

Sauveur Chiocca fought his next fights with varying success all in France . On February 6, 1953, however, he caused a surprise in Gothenburg , because there he defeated the Finnish ex-European lightweight champion Elis Ask over 8 rounds on points. In the next fight he parted on February 24, 1953 in Asnières-sur-Seine from the reigning European welterweight champion Jacques Prigent in a non-title fight draw.

Sauveur Chiocca then sought a fight for the European welterweight championship. But he lost to his compatriot Hoacine Khalfi on April 2, 1953 in Lyon by knockout in the 7th round, making such a fight a long way off. At the end of 1953 he went to the United States to try his luck there. He came there to six wins in 11 fights. The strongest opponent he boxed there was Al Andrews , whom he faced on July 19, 1954 in New York City . Sauveur Chiocca lost this important fight on points and then returned to France.

On October 22, 1954, he defeated ex-European champion Gilbert Lavoine on points in Paris and on December 19, 1954 received the chance to box against Valere Benedetto in Aix-en-Provence for the French welterweight championship. After 12 rounds Benedetto won this fight and remained French champion.

In the next few years Sauveur Chiocca fought against the majority of the European world champions and middleweights. On April 24, 1955 he beat Idrissa Dione in Paris on points and lost on November 24, 1955 in Paris in another fight for the French championship against Jacques Herbillon after 12 rounds just on points. In 1956 he defeated Jacques Prigent in Paris, but was defeated on 10 November 1956 in Milan by the Italian European lightweight champion Duilio Loi on points.

From 1957 to 1959 he was often in the ring against German boxers. On December 27, 1957 he fought against Hans-Werner Wohlers in a draw, lost to Peter Müller (boxer) on points in Cologne on January 7, 1959 , fought against Rolf Peters in Stuttgart on March 14, 1959 and defeated on August 7 1959 in Ajaccio Hans Häfner by knockout in the 3rd round. However, Sauveur Chiocca also lost important fights in those years, which threw him back again and again in his attempt to fight for the European Championship. So he lost on December 18, 1959 in Rome against Bruno Visintin on points and was defeated on June 2, 1960 in Copenhagen also to the Dane Christian Christensen on points.

On December 5, 1960, he fought in Paris against Hippolyte Annex again for the French welterweight championship and again he lost on points. Sauveur Chiocca achieved a very remarkable result on February 20, 1960 in Pairs. He fought against the famous Hungarian László Papp , went with him over the full number of laps and only lost on points.

On March 10, 1962, Sauveur Chiocca became French welterweight champion two days before his 33rd birthday. He defeated Andre Davier on points in Nice on March 10, 1962 . On June 1, 1962, however, he had to give this title back to Jean-Baptiste Rolland by losing points after 12 rounds .

On December 18, 1965, Sauveur Chiocca fought his last fight in Rome. Although he had previously paused for two years, he managed to keep up with Bruno Visintin and only lost on points.

Then Sauveur Chiocca ended his boxer career. He had fought in four continents and always gave everything. Because of this, he was also one of the most popular French boxers. In his long career, in which he fought 124 fights, he lost only two fights by knockout.

After his boxer career, Sauveur Chiocca ran a restaurant in Nice with his wife Colette.
