Ignácz Pfeifer (born September 30, 1867 in Szentgál in Veszprém County , † September 7, 1941 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian chemist.

After studying chemistry from September 1887 to 1892 at the Josephs University in Budapest , he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology for two years. During this time he wrote a book with alcohol tables.

He then moved to the chemical laboratory of the Hungarian state railway Magyar Államvasutak , where he developed a method for determining water hardness, the so-called Wartha-Pfeifer process . For the next four years he dealt with the chemical cleaning of boiler water and the reduction of corrosion and incrustation.

He also dealt with heating technology, examined the suitability of coals for house heating, and proved that they were unnecessary to import. In 1898 he published Survey of Boiler Furnace Constructions .

In 1900 he became a private lecturer at Josephs University. During this time he published two magazines.

In 1903 he opened a technical office and dealt with problems with gas generators. He developed a gas analyzer for this purpose and patented a process for producing tar-free generator gas from lignite.

With Vince Wartha he took part in the development of the Budapest gas works, studied the composition of natural gas in Hungary and made a detailed statement on the exploitation of natural gas. He was also successful in the halogenation of methane .

On Wartha's recommendation, he was awarded the title of Assistant Professor in 1907 and appointed professor at the Institute for Chemical Technology for seven years. Around 1910 there were anti-Semitic tendencies there. After his forced retirement, he initially became a consultant for the Baumberg gas works in Hamburg. Soon afterwards he became head of the research and development laboratory at the invitation of Lipót Aschner , the general director and co-owner of the Tungsram plants.

He was a member of the Hungarian Chemical Society, of which he became president in 1929.
