Ignatia von Hertling , until 1872 Anna von Hertling (born April 2, 1838 in Aschaffenburg , † March 27, 1909 in Koblenz-Pfaffendorf ) was a German baroness , nun and founder of a monastery.

origin

She came from the Electoral Palatinate , later Bavarian noble family von Hertling and was the daughter of the Bavarian forester Michael Joseph Freiherr von Hertling (1802–1867) and his wife Wilhelmine von Bourcourd (1811–1884). Karl von Hertling (1843–1908), Dutch forest director on the island of Java , was her brother, the German Chancellor and Bavarian Prime Minister Georg von Hertling her cousin.

Under her real name Anna von Hertling , she entered the Mainz adoration monastery “Maria Hilf” of the Capuchin Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration on October 28, 1871 . Here she was dressed on September 17, 1872 and was given the religious name Ignatia . On 15 October 1873 she put in Mainz , the profession , and her mother came simultaneously to the III. Order of the Franciscans.

From 1879 Sister Ignatia served as secretary to Mother Superior Bernardina Grua, and on July 22, 1882 she was elected as her successor as Superior of the Mainz Monastery, which she held for 18 years. In the Kulturkampf , novices were initially no longer allowed to be admitted and the Hessian government attempted to completely abolish the contemplative monastery in 1895, which could only be prevented with a narrow margin.

Therefore, from then on, Mother Ignatia tried to found a daughter monastery in another German state outside the Grand Duchy of Hesse . This was achieved in 1903 when Paula Reinhard from Koblenz , whose entry into the Mainz monastery had failed for health reasons, gave her villa in Koblenz-Pfaffendorf (called "Villa Bethlehem") to the order for this purpose. Four sisters from Mainz, led by their mother Ignatia von Hertling, founded the Bethlehem daughter monastery there in 1904 , after which six more nuns followed. On October 17, 1904, the church was consecrated and Perpetual Adoration opened. On the same day the first superior election took place in Koblenz and mother Ignatia was elected first superior, which office she held until her death on March 27, 1909.

The Capuchin Poor Clares live in a strict enclosure , in complete silence and personal poverty. They maintain eternal adoration in front of the Holy of Holies (layer by layer) and earn their living by making hosts for worship. Both the Mainz and Koblenz monasteries exist to the present day (2012).
