Ignatios Antoniadis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ignatios Antoniadis (born December 2, 1955 in Chios ) is a Greek theoretical physicist who deals with string theory and particle physics and works in Paris and at CERN .

Life

Antoniadis graduated from Athens University with a degree in Mathematics in 1977 and a DEA degree in Paris in 1978. In 1980 he received his doctorate at the École normal supérieure (Thèse de 3ème Cycle) with the second part of the doctorate (Thèse d'État) in the French system at the time at the École polytechnique 1983. From 1982 he conducted research for the CNRS (from 1986 as Chargé de Research) at the Center for Theoretical Physics (CPHT) of the École polytechnique. From 1986 to 1988 he was at CERN and from 1983 to 1986 also a Research Associate at SLAC . From 1992 he was research director of the CNRS at the École polytechnique, where he became professor (Chargé de cours) in 1997. From 2000 to 2014 he was a member of the theory department at CERN.

Antoniadis deals with string theory, tests of their dualities, quantum gravity , supersymmetric and grand unified theories . He played an important role in the development of superstring theory models in four dimensions (fermionic construction). He is particularly known for investigating the phenomenology of superstring theory (i.e., for example, the Great Unified Theories derived from it at low energies and statements about the particle spectrum) and possibly observable effects such as extra dimensions and changes in the gravitational force at short distances.

In 2000 he won the silver medal of the CNRS, in 1995 the price of the Greek Bodossaki Foundation and in 2002 he received the special price of the French Physical Society. He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Ioannina . In 2008 he received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Commission (ERC).
