Ignaz Liebel , also Ignaz Liebl (born June 22, 1754 as Joannes Ignatius Liebl in Falkenau an der Eger , Bohemia ; † September 7, 1820 in Vienna ) was an Austrian philologist, writer and professor in Vienna.

Life

Ignaz Liebel was born as the son of Johannes Maximilian Liebl (1725–1792), a citizen and master farrier in Falkenau and his wife Maria Anna, née. Kraus (1730–1772) born.

His parents supported his higher education despite limited financial possibilities. In 1773 he came to Vienna, where he completed his studies and initially became a teacher. In 1784 he received the post of repetitor in the Theresian Knight Academy and at the same time taught at the university at the philosophical faculty of aesthetics and philology. In 1790 he was appointed provisional professor and in 1792 he was appointed full professor. From 1807 (after the study reform) he taught exclusively aesthetics until a few months before his death. In 1808 he became a doctor of philosophy and in 1814 dean of the philosophical faculty.

Liebel was considered an important philologist, but was controversial as an aesthetician, which he put forward through dull polemics in the "Epistle on poetic bungling and bungling" and was reflected in his complete lack of understanding of Grillparzer's drama The Ahnfrau , which he viewed with rejection and a shake of his head .
